Where AI Answers Get Their Sources: AI Citation Data for 2027

Every study of AI citations gets summarized the same way: Reddit and Wikipedia win, so go get mentioned there. The underlying data says something more useful. Citation share is engine-specific to the point of contradiction, with Reddit leading ChatGPT at 16.7% mention share while YouTube leads Perplexity at 31.2%. More importantly, the top 10 domains on any engine account for only 11% to 13% of all citations, which leaves 88% of citation supply spread across a tail of more than 7,000 domains. The overlap between what gets cited and what ranks is thin: roughly 12% of cited URLs also sit in Google's top 10 for the same prompt. This page covers 16 figures on citation concentration, engine differences, and what that overlap gap means for a business deciding where to spend effort. Updated quarterly, because citation share moves faster than rankings do.

The numbers at a glance

  • 88% Of AI citations sit outside the top 10 domains

  • 31.2% YouTube share of Perplexity mentions
  • 12% Cited URLs that also rank in Google's top 10

The leaderboard is engine-specific

Reddit holds 16.7% mention share on ChatGPT (Ahrefs Brand Radar, 3.1 million queries, July 2026) and 19.9% on Google AI Mode. YouTube leads elsewhere: 31.2% of Perplexity mentions and 21.1% on Google AI Overviews, while barely registering on ChatGPT. Wikipedia holds 47.9% of ChatGPT's top 10 source share in Profound's dataset, which measures a different thing than overall mention share and explains why published figures for the same domain vary so widely.

Two denominators circulate in this research. Share of overall citation volume puts Reddit at roughly 1.8% of ChatGPT citations. Share within the top 10 cited sources puts the same domain at 11.3%. Both are correct and they describe the same data, so check which one a study used before quoting it.

Concentration is lower than the headlines suggest

Analysis of 22,295 AI answers across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode found 7,058 unique cited domains. The top 10 domains account for 12.2% of citations on ChatGPT, 11.1% on Perplexity and 13.1% on AI Mode. Widening to the top 50 still reaches only about a third. Roughly 88% of citations point at domains outside the famous names.

This sits against studies reporting that a small set of domains holds most citation share, including a widely quoted 68% for the top 15. The difference comes from measuring top-source share within answers rather than share of all citations. For a business deciding where to spend effort, the 88% figure is the one that matters, because it describes the pool your pages actually compete in.

Citation and ranking are separate outcomes

About 12% of URLs cited by AI engines also rank in Google's top 10 for the same prompt. Only around 11% of domains cited by ChatGPT are also cited by Perplexity. Answers pull between 3.6 and 6.7 sources each depending on the engine, which means a handful of slots per answer rather than ten blue links.

The content mix

Encyclopedic and forum content anchors the citation pool: Wikipedia at 47.9% of ChatGPT's top 10 share, social platforms at 9% of all AI citations in Q1 2026, and the wiki host Fandom at 7.16% as the leading source on Google AI Mode. Video carries disproportionate weight on the Google surfaces.

What this means for a growing business

Chasing the leaderboard domains is the wrong read. Reddit and YouTube win aggregate share because they answer everything. The citations that name your category sit in the tail, and the page that earns one is usually not the page that ranks, which means AI visibility needs its own measurement rather than a column added to a rankings report.

Frequently asked questions

Which websites do AI engines cite most?

It depends on the engine. Reddit leads ChatGPT at 16.7% mention share and Google AI Mode at 19.9%. YouTube leads Perplexity at 31.2% and Google AI Overviews at 21.1%. Wikipedia holds the largest share of ChatGPT's top 10 sources at 47.9%.

Do the top domains control most AI citations?

No. The top 10 domains hold 11% to 13% of citations depending on the engine, and the top 50 reach only about a third. Roughly 88% of citations point at domains outside that group, spread across more than 7,000 cited domains.

If my page ranks in Google, will AI engines cite it?

Not reliably. About 12% of cited URLs also rank in Google's top 10 for the same prompt. Ranking helps and does not decide the outcome, which is why AI visibility gets tracked separately from rankings.

How many sources does an AI answer use?

Between 3.6 and 6.7 on average, depending on the engine. ChatGPT sits at the low end and Perplexity at the high end.

How often does this data change?

Monthly. Reddit's share of Perplexity citations fell from around 47% to roughly 24% over 2026, and YouTube overtook Reddit as the leading social source on some engines. This page is updated quarterly for that reason.
