What a Backlink Actually Costs: Link Building Price Data for 2027

One figure runs the entire link pricing conversation: $508.95, the average price SEO professionals told Editorial.link they would accept for a quality backlink. It gets quoted as the market rate, and it is not one. It measures willingness to pay, not what anyone paid. Transaction data from 22,703 completed placements puts the median at $112 and the average at $161 before agency markup, and a separate dataset of 574 secured placements lands at $179. Both sets are correct, because they answer different questions. This page covers 17 figures on quoted prices, transacted prices, cost by Domain Rating tier, and the all-in cost per link once prospecting, outreach and content are counted, which is the number that decides whether a retainer is fair. The quoted number

Editorial.link surveyed 518 SEO professionals and found an average acceptable price of $508.95 for a single high quality backlink. In the same survey, 80.9% expect prices to keep rising over the next two to three years, and respondents named $8,406 as the average minimum monthly budget to stay competitive in high difficulty niches.

Read the question that produced it. The figure measures what buyers say they would accept paying, not what placements cost. Almost every pricing article in this industry traces back to this one study, which is why a number describing sentiment gets quoted as a market rate.

The transacted price

PressWhizz analysed 22,703 completed link placements and found a median price of $112 and an average of $161 before agency markup, with the average pulled upward by a small number of premium placements. BacklinkOutreach.Agency, working from 1,225 publisher quotes and 574 completed placements, reports an average secured price of $179 against an average asking price of $269, so negotiated placements clear roughly a third below the opening quote.

Authority Hacker's survey of more than 750 link builders puts the average paid placement fee at $83 and finds 74.3% of link builders pay for placements. Ahrefs, measuring prices quoted by sites selling links, reports $361. Five studies, five methods, and a spread from $83 to $509 that comes almost entirely from what each one measured.

The authority ladder

Price tracks Domain Rating and then jumps at the top. Direct costs run roughly $130 to $220 at DR 20 to 40, $220 to $400 at DR 40 to 60, $400 to $700 at DR 60 to 80, and $700 to $1,200 or more above DR 80. Buying the same placements through a vendor or agency roughly doubles each band. Government and education domains sit in their own category above $3,000.

The all-in cost

The placement fee is a fraction of the bill. Counting prospecting, outreach, tooling and the content behind the placement, the realistic all-in cost runs $150 to $350 per link through a freelance link builder and $250 to $600 through a mid-market agency. Restricted niches such as casino, crypto and CBD run from $500 to beyond $3,000. On budgets, 46.5% of SEOs spend $5,000 to $10,000 a month on link building alone and 18% spend more than $10,000, with link building taking 28% to 36% of total SEO spend.

What this means for a growing business

Ask any vendor which number they are quoting. A $500 per link proposal is reasonable when it covers prospecting, outreach and the content behind the placement. It is a bad deal when it is the placement fee on a site that transacts at $112. The question that separates the two is simple: what does this price include, and what does the site charge directly?

Frequently asked questions

How much does a backlink cost in 2027?

It depends on which number you mean. SEO professionals report $508.95 as an acceptable price, while transaction data across 22,703 placements shows a median of $112 and an average of $161 before agency markup. All-in costs through an agency run $250 to $600 per link.

Why do published backlink prices vary so much?

Because the studies measure different things. Authority Hacker's $83 is a placement fee only. Ahrefs' $361 is the price sites quote. Editorial.link's $509 is what buyers say they would accept. None of them is wrong and none of them is the same number.

What should I pay per link?

For a DR 50 to 70 placement, $300 to $600 all in is the realistic middle of the market. Below roughly $100 for a placement claiming real authority is a consistent warning sign rather than a bargain.

How much of an SEO budget goes to link building?

Between 28% and 36% of total SEO spend. Nearly half of SEOs surveyed spend $5,000 to $10,000 a month on links alone, and 18% spend more than $10,000.

Is link building getting more expensive?

80.9% of surveyed SEO professionals expect prices to rise over the next two to three years, and the average crossed $500 in 2025 on the survey measure.
