Google Algorithm Updates: The Confirmed 2026 Timeline
Google confirmed six ranking updates in 2026: a Discover core update in February, spam updates in March, June and August, and core updates in March and May. This page lists each one with the start date and rollout duration taken from the Search Status Dashboard, which is the only record that carries Google's own timings. Two patterns are worth planning around. Spam updates outnumbered core updates for the first time, three to two, and they now complete in hours rather than weeks, with the March 2026 spam update finishing in 19 hours and 30 minutes. Core updates still run roughly 12 days against a historic median of 14.5. Use the dates to annotate your analytics rather than to explain a drop on their own, since seasonality, lost links and tracking changes produce similar charts. Updated after each confirmed update.

2026, confirmed
Six ranking updates were confirmed in 2026 and logged on the Google Search Status Dashboard. The February 2026 Discover core update began on 5 February for US English, the first core update aimed at the Discover feed rather than web search. The March 2026 spam update started on 24 March and completed in 19 hours and 30 minutes, the fastest confirmed rollout on record. The March 2026 core update began three days later on 27 March and ran 12 days and 4 hours. The May 2026 core update started on 21 May and ran 11 days and 21 hours. The June 2026 spam update started on 24 June and took 2 days and 1 hour, and the August 2026 spam update started on 18 August and took 2 days and 16 hours.
The cadence
Across the 16 confirmed core rollouts since November 2021, the mean duration is 17.4 days and the median is 14.5. Both 2026 core updates finished faster than that, at roughly 12 days each. Core updates have arrived every two to three months through 2025 and 2026, with spam updates filling the gaps.
The composition changed in 2026. Spam updates outnumbered web core updates three to two, reversing every year since 2022, and spam rollouts now finish in hours or a couple of days rather than weeks. A site hit by one learns its fate quickly, which is a change from the multi-week uncertainty that used to follow.
The long arc
Panda in 2011 demoted thin and duplicated content at scale. Penguin in 2012 targeted manipulative link profiles and was later folded into the core algorithm. Hummingbird in 2013 moved ranking toward query meaning rather than keyword matching, and BERT in 2019 applied language understanding to roughly one search in ten at launch. Core Web Vitals became a ranking input in 2021. In 2024 the helpful content system was folded into core, which ended quality assessment as a separate system. AI Overviews reached scale through 2025, moving answers onto the results page.
How to use this timeline
Annotate your analytics with these dates rather than treating them as explanations. Google confirms only a fraction of its changes, so an undated drop is not evidence of an update, and seasonality, lost links, site migrations, tracking changes and competitor improvements produce charts that look identical. If traffic moved and the date lines up with a confirmed update, the question to answer next is which pages and which queries moved, not which update to blame.

My traffic dropped. Was it an algorithm update?
Check the date against the confirmed list first. If it does not line up, look at seasonality, lost links, tracking changes, a migration or competitor movement before assuming an update, since Google confirms only a fraction of its changes.
