What SEO Costs a Small Business in 2026

Published SEO prices disagree with each other, and the disagreement is informative. Surveys put the average agency retainer at $3,209 a month and Clutch's verified client reviews land almost identically at $3,199, but the most common price any provider charges is $501 to $1,000, and 30% charge under $500. Averages run high because a small number of enterprise retainers pull them up, so neither figure describes what a specific small business should pay. The number that makes proposals comparable is the hourly rate: agencies average $98.90, freelancers $71.59 and consultants $171.18. Divide a retainer by that and you get the real scope, which is how a $500 month turns out to buy about five hours of qualified attention. This page covers 16 figures on retainers, rates, price distribution and what a budget actually funds. Updated annually.

The averages

Ahrefs surveyed 439 SEO providers and found an average monthly agency retainer of $3,209, with consultants at $3,250 and freelancers at $1,348. The overall average across provider types is $2,917. Clutch's verified client review data puts the average monthly cost at $3,199 and the average one-off project at $37,158. Backlinko's survey of more than 300 professionals puts typical engagements lower, at $1,000 to $2,500 a month.

These averages run high for a structural reason. A small number of enterprise retainers above $10,000 pull the mean upward, so the average describes the market rather than any particular business's bill.

What most people pay

The most common retainer band is $501 to $1,000 a month, charged by 20.4% of providers, and 30% charge under $500. SE Ranking's survey of 260 agencies found 64% charging under $1,000 a month, with only 13% between $2,000 and $5,000 and 2% above $5,000. The median experience for a small business sits closer to $1,500 to $2,000 than to the $3,200 average.

The hourly rate

Hourly rates are the cleanest way to compare proposals that describe different deliverables. Freelancers average $71.59 an hour, agencies $98.90 and consultants $171.18. Retainers are how 78.2% of providers sell ongoing work, and 56.2% of agencies raised their prices during 2026.

What the budget covers

A mid-market retainer funds three things. Technical and measurement work covers audits, fixes, tracking setup and the reporting layer that ties channels together. Content covers briefs, drafting and updates to pages that already rank and have gone stale. Authority covers outreach and digital PR, which takes 28% to 36% of a typical SEO budget on its own.

What to ask before signing

Divide the retainer by the hourly rate and you have the real scope. At the average agency rate, $500 a month buys about five hours of qualified attention, which covers reporting and very little else. Ask any proposal how many hours it funds and who performs the work. A cheap retainer staffed by a junior is more expensive than a mid-market one staffed properly, because the first one produces nothing you can measure.

Frequently asked questions

How much does SEO cost per month in 2026?

The average agency retainer is $3,209 and the overall average across provider types is $2,917, but the most common price charged is $501 to $1,000 a month. Most small businesses land between $1,500 and $5,000 depending on market competition and site condition.

Why do SEO prices vary so much?

Because SEO is not one standardized product and averages are skewed. A handful of enterprise retainers above $10,000 pull the mean up, while 64% of surveyed agencies charge under $1,000. The scope behind the price is what differs, not the service name.

What does a $500 a month SEO retainer buy?

About five hours of qualified attention at the average agency rate of $98.90 an hour. That covers reporting and small fixes. It does not fund content production, technical work and authority building at the same time.

What is a normal SEO hourly rate?

Freelancers average $71.59, agencies $98.90 and consultants $171.18, according to Ahrefs' survey of 439 providers. US and Canadian providers sit toward the upper end of those figures.

Are SEO prices rising?

Yes. SE Ranking found 56.2% of agencies raised prices during 2026, driven by rising link costs and the additional work AI search visibility now requires.
