Where 1,000 Google Searches Actually Go in 2026

Take 1,000 US Google searches. About 680 end without a click to anything. Roughly 276 reach the open web, and the balance lands on a Google owned property. That is the clearest way to state what clickstream panel data now shows: the zero click rate hit 68.01% in the first four months of 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024, and the number of searches producing any click fell 22.9% over those two years. This page covers 18 figures on where searches end up, what AI Overviews do to the click, and how little of AI Mode has arrived so far. The practical consequence is a measurement problem rather than a ranking problem: a position that held its value lost the traffic that used to come with it, which only shows up if impressions, citations, clicks and revenue sit in one view. Updated twice a year.

The split

Of every 1,000 US Google searches between January and April 2026, about 680 ended without a click to anything, roughly 276 clicked through to the open web, and the balance landed on a Google owned property. The zero click rate reached 68.01%, up from 60.45% in 2024, and searches producing any click fell 22.9% across those two years. Searches that led to another Google search rather than a website rose 7.2 percentage points.

The data comes from Similarweb's clickstream panel covering US desktop and mobile, so it measures what people actually did rather than what a rank tracker predicts. It excludes searches inside Google's mobile app, where zero click behaviour may run higher still.

The AI Overview effect

AI Overviews now appear on more than 20% of Google searches. When one appears, the zero click rate runs about 83% against roughly 60% without, and the position one organic click-through rate falls 58% once the wider decline is controlled for. Pew Research found users clicked a result on 8% of searches showing an AI summary, against 15% without one. Readers spend about 14.3 seconds on an AI Overview before leaving the results page, and a site cited inside one sees an average click-through rate of 3.8%.

Estimates of the click loss range from 37.7% to 61% depending on the panel and the method, and one same-keyword study found no loss at all. The direction is consistent across almost every dataset even though the size is not.

What is coming

AI Mode answers almost everything it is asked: 93% of AI Mode searches end without a click, and in about 75% of sessions the user never leaves Google. It also barely exists yet, taking 0.34% of US searches in early 2026. The next phase of this shift has not started.

Publishers are already absorbing the first phase. Search referrals to publishers fell about 33% worldwide and 38% in the US in the year to November 2025. Brands cited inside an AI Overview see roughly 35% higher click-through than those not cited, which is why citation has become its own objective.

What this means for a growing business

Ranking reports measure a position, and the position no longer predicts the visit. The businesses that handle this well stop treating rankings as the outcome and start tracking impressions, citations, clicks and closed revenue in one measurement layer. Without that, a dashboard full of green arrows sits next to a flat pipeline and nobody can explain the gap.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of Google searches end without a click?

68.01% of US searches between January and April 2026, according to SparkToro and Similarweb clickstream data, up from 60.45% in 2024. Other panels put the figure between 58.5% and 69% depending on method.

How many searches actually reach a website?

About 276 of every 1,000 US searches reach the open web. The rest end without a click or land on a Google owned property.

How much do AI Overviews reduce clicks?

The zero click rate runs about 83% on searches that trigger an AI Overview against roughly 60% without one, and position one click-through rate falls 58%. Estimates across studies range from 37.7% to 61%.

Is AI Mode making this worse?

It will. 93% of AI Mode searches end without a click and users stay inside Google in about 75% of sessions. It accounted for only 0.34% of US searches in early 2026, so most of its effect is still ahead.

What should a business measure instead of rankings?

Impressions, AI citations, clicks and closed revenue in one view. Rankings still matter, but they stopped predicting traffic, so a ranking report on its own no longer tells you whether the investment is working.
