Almost every Google Analytics integration lives on one screen: Admin, then Product links. This guide walks through the connections that matter most for a small or mid-size business. You will connect Google Search Console so search queries sit next to on-site behavior, link Google Ads so ad cost and conversions share one dataset, share reports and dashboards with clients or leadership without handing out admin rights, and add your Google Analytics certificate to LinkedIn once you have earned it. Each section lists the permissions you need first, because missing access is the reason most links fail.
What You Need Before You Connect Anything
Every link in Google Analytics checks permissions on both sides. You need the right role in GA4 and the right role in the other product, on the same Google account. If either is missing, the product you want to connect simply never shows up in the picker, and GA4 gives you no error explaining why.
| Integration | Role needed in GA4 | Role needed on the other side |
|---|---|---|
| Search Console | Editor or Administrator on the property | Verified owner of the Search Console property |
| Google Ads | Editor or Administrator on the property | Administrator access on the Google Ads account |
| BigQuery | Editor or Administrator on the property | Owner of the Google Cloud project |
| Merchant Center | Editor or Administrator on the property | Admin on the Merchant Center account |
| Looker Studio | Viewer or higher on the property | Any Google account |
If your property does not exist yet, start with our guide on how to set up Google Analytics 4, which also covers adding users and assigning roles. Do the linking from a company-owned Google account. Links you create from a contractor's personal Gmail keep working after that person leaves, but nobody left on your team can edit them.
How to Connect Google Search Console to Google Analytics
Search Console and GA4 measure opposite ends of the same visit. Search Console sees everything before the click: the query someone typed, how many times your page appeared, its average position, and the click-through rate. GA4 sees everything after the click: engagement, scroll depth, key events, revenue. Linked together, you can finally answer the question every SEO program lives on: which queries bring in visitors who actually convert.
Steps to link Search Console
- In Google Analytics, click Admin (the gear icon, bottom left).
- Under Product links, click Search Console links.
- Click Link.
- Under Choose Search Console properties, click Choose accounts. Tick the property for your site and click Confirm, then Next. GA4 only lists properties where you are a verified owner.
- Under Select web stream, click Choose, pick the web stream for the same website, and click Next.
- Review the settings and click Submit. The status changes to Link created.
Publish the Search Console reports
The link alone does not put any new reports in your navigation. GA4 ships the Search Console reports as an unpublished collection, so you have to switch it on:
- Go to Reports, then Library at the bottom of the left menu. You need the Editor role to see Library.
- Find the Search Console collection card.
- Click the three-dot menu on the card and choose Publish.
A Search Console section now appears in your Reports menu with two reports. Queries shows search terms with clicks, impressions, CTR, and average position. Google organic search traffic shows landing pages with Search Console metrics alongside GA4 engagement and key events. That second report is the one worth bookmarking: it shows which pages already rank and convert, and which ones rank but stall because they need more authority or a better offer.
Rules and limits worth knowing
One Search Console property links to one web stream, and one web stream links to one Search Console property. If you own both a Domain property and a URL-prefix property for the same site, link the Domain property. It covers every subdomain and both http and https, so nothing falls through the gaps.
The Search Console reports read from Search Console's own data store, which holds 16 months of history, so you do not start from zero on the day you link. Expect the newest data to trail by about two days. Two limitations trip up analysts. You cannot use Search Console dimensions inside Explorations, and you can only combine them with a short list of GA4 dimensions such as landing page and country. For deeper query analysis, pull the data into Looker Studio or BigQuery.
You can also start the link from the Search Console side: open Settings, then Associations, then Associate, and pick the Google Analytics property. Both routes create the same connection.
You are almost certainly a delegated owner or a full user in Search Console, and not a verified owner. Verify ownership yourself (a DNS record is the most durable method), or have the verified owner create the link. We hit this on nearly every new client onboarding, especially when a former agency set up Search Console under its own account.
Know which queries actually produce leads?
Linked Search Console data shows the queries. Our SEO team turns that data into content and technical priorities tied to pipeline, not traffic.
How to Link Google Ads to Google Analytics
Without the link, GA4 sees paid visitors and Google Ads sees clicks, and the two never compare notes. With it, ad cost and campaign data appear inside GA4, and GA4 sends key events and audiences back to Google Ads for bidding and remarketing. If you run paid search or Performance Max, this link decides whether smart bidding optimizes toward real leads or toward page views.
Steps to link Google Ads
- In Google Analytics, click Admin, then under Product links click Google Ads links.
- Click Link.
- Click Choose Google Ads accounts. The list shows every Ads account where your Google login has Administrator access. Tick the account (or the manager account) and click Confirm, then Next.
- On the configuration screen, leave Enable personalized advertising on so GA4 audiences reach Google Ads. Expand Enable auto-tagging and keep it on.
- Click Next, review, and click Submit.
The link shows as active within minutes. Cost and click data typically takes up to 24 hours to appear in GA4 under Advertising and in the acquisition reports. Linking a manager account connects every client account underneath it in one step, which beats linking 12 sub-accounts one at a time.
Import GA4 key events into Google Ads
The link makes the import possible, but it does not run the import for you. In Google Ads:
- Go to Goals, then Conversions, then Summary.
- Click New conversion action, then Import.
- Choose Google Analytics 4 properties, then Web, and click Continue.
- Tick the key events you want (form submissions, phone calls, chat starts, purchases) and click Import and continue.
Watch for double counting. If the Google Ads tag already tracks the same form submission, you now have two conversion actions for one lead. Keep one as the Primary action that bidding uses, and set the other to Secondary so it reports without steering spend. This single setting explains a large share of the inflated conversion numbers we find in conversion audits.
Confirm auto-tagging is working
Auto-tagging adds a gclid parameter to every ad click, and GA4 uses it to attribute the session to the right campaign and keyword. Check it in Google Ads under Admin, then Account settings, then Auto-tagging. If paid traffic shows up in GA4 as organic or (not set), the usual culprit is a redirect on your site that strips the gclid from the URL. Test by clicking your own ad preview and checking whether the parameter survives to the final landing page. Your developer can fix the redirect rule in a few minutes once you know it is there.
Other Integrations Worth Connecting
Search Console and Google Ads cover most small businesses. Once those work, these are the next links to look at, in rough order of usefulness:
| Integration | Where to link it | What you get | Who needs it |
|---|---|---|---|
| BigQuery | Admin, then Product links, then BigQuery links | Raw, event-level export you can query with SQL. Standard properties get a daily export of up to 1 million events. | Anyone who wants data beyond GA4's retention limits or plans to build custom attribution |
| Merchant Center | Admin, then Product links, then Merchant Center links | Product-level performance for Shopping and Performance Max campaigns | Ecommerce stores running Shopping ads |
| Search Ads 360 / Display & Video 360 | Admin, then Product links | Cost and campaign data from Google's enterprise media platforms | Larger advertisers on those platforms |
| Looker Studio | From Looker Studio, using the Google Analytics connector | Shareable, branded dashboards that blend GA4 with other sources | Anyone reporting to clients or leadership |
Link BigQuery early, even if nobody on your team writes SQL yet. The export is not retroactive. It only captures events from the day you switch it on, so a property linked today has a year of raw history ready when you finally need it. Google Cloud's free sandbox tier handles the storage for most small sites.
How to Share a Google Analytics Dashboard
GA4 has no single "dashboard" object you can send to someone. What people mean by sharing a Google Analytics dashboard depends on who receives it and whether that person should have a login. Pick the method by the recipient.
Add the person as a Viewer
For staff and in-house teams, the simplest share is access itself. Open Admin, then Property access management, click the + button, choose Add users, enter their Google account email, and assign the Viewer role. Tick No Cost Metrics or No Revenue Metrics if they should not see ad spend or sales figures.
Share a report link or download a file
Open any standard report and click the Share this report icon in the top right. Share link copies a URL to that exact report with your date range and filters applied, but it only opens for people who already have access to the property. Download File exports the report as a PDF or CSV, which anyone can open. Files go stale the moment you send them, so treat them as one-off updates.
Share an exploration
In Explore, open the exploration and click the Share exploration icon. Everyone with access to the property can now see it in read-only form and make their own copy to edit. Explorations stay private by default, which surprises people who built a funnel and assumed the team could see it.
Build a Looker Studio dashboard (best for clients and leadership)
Looker Studio is the right answer when the recipient should never touch GA4. It is free and connects natively.
- Go to lookerstudio.google.com and create a Blank report.
- Choose the Google Analytics connector, select your account and property, and click Add.
- Build the charts. Start with sessions by channel and key events by landing page. Add the Search Console query table if you linked it.
- Click Share, enter email addresses, and set them to Can view. Or switch link sharing on for anyone with the URL.
The data source uses the owner's credentials by default, which means viewers see live GA4 numbers without an Analytics login. That convenience has a catch. If the data source owner's account gets removed from GA4, every chart breaks. Build client dashboards from a company account, and use Schedule delivery in the Share menu to email a PDF on a weekly cadence. GA4 itself has no scheduled email reports, so this is the replacement for anyone who misses them from Universal Analytics.
Team members get Viewer access. Clients and executives get a Looker Studio dashboard with a scheduled weekly PDF. Nobody outside the company gets Editor access to a production property unless they are configuring it.

How to Add Your Google Analytics Certificate to LinkedIn
The Google Analytics Certification is a free exam on Google's Skillshop platform, and it now tests GA4 (the old GAIQ and Universal Analytics exams are retired). You need a score of 80 percent to pass, and the certificate stays valid for 12 months before you retake the exam.
From Skillshop
After you pass, Skillshop issues a certificate with a shareable link and a credential ID. Open your Skillshop profile, go to your achievements or certifications, and open the Google Analytics certificate. Where Skillshop shows a LinkedIn share option, it pre-fills the certification on your profile. Copy the certificate URL either way, because you will want it for the manual route below.
Add it manually on LinkedIn
- Open your LinkedIn profile and click Add profile section.
- Under Recommended, choose Add licenses & certifications.
- Fill in the fields as shown in the table below.
- Add skills such as Google Analytics and Web Analytics so the certificate attaches to them, then click Save.
| LinkedIn field | What to enter |
|---|---|
| Name | Google Analytics Certification (GA4). Recruiters' search filters match this wording better than "GAIQ." |
| Issuing organization | Google (select the company page from the dropdown so the logo appears) |
| Issue date | The month you passed |
| Expiration date | 12 months after the issue date |
| Credential ID | The ID printed on your Skillshop certificate |
| Credential URL | The public certificate link from Skillshop |
Set a calendar reminder 11 months out. An expired certificate on a profile reads worse than none at all. And if you are hiring, treat the badge as a floor. A candidate who can explain why paid traffic shows up as (not set) knows more than the exam tests.
Integration Problems We Fix Most Often
These come up on almost every analytics audit we run for new clients. Each one takes minutes to fix once you know where to look.
- Search Console property missing from the picker. You are not a verified owner. Verify through DNS, then try again.
- Search Console reports missing from the menu. The link exists but nobody published the collection in Library.
- Paid clicks showing as organic or (not set). Auto-tagging is off, or a redirect drops the
gclid. - Google Ads conversions doubled. The Ads tag and the GA4 import both count the same action as Primary.
- Shared report link opens to "no access." The recipient has no role on the property. Send a Looker Studio link or a PDF instead.
- Client dashboard suddenly blank. The Looker Studio data source belonged to someone who lost GA4 access. Transfer ownership to a company account.
- No conversions to import. Nobody marked form submissions or calls as key events. Your CRM and form tools need to fire events GA4 can see before any of this pays off.
If your site also leans on local search or content marketing, the Search Console link matters most. It is the only free source of query-level data you get, and it feeds every decision about which pages to build next.
Each link takes five minutes. The value shows up when they all feed the same property, because then a single report can trace a search query or an ad click through to a key event and a closed deal. Start with Search Console and Google Ads, then give stakeholders a Looker Studio view. That covers the measurement layer most small businesses are missing.
